Once you have that probation on you, they get you on gun charges and all that when you’re older. I’m still on probation! For nine years now, and I have three more to go. That’s tight, you feel me? But it’s not tight when you’re older, and you realize you can’t even leave your city without checking in with your probation officer. Shootergang Kony: When you’re 12 and you’re on probation, you think it’s tight! You’re the only boy in your school that’s been to jail. What is it like, coming of age under those conditions? You just don’t grow up fast enough, and you fuck up before you’re able to figure it out. Especially if you’re gangbangin and shit. Probation will have you going back down for the rest of your life. At that age, I went down for shoplifting, and from there, you’re caught. Shootergang Kony: Yup, I’ve been on probation since I was 12 years old. In a few of these songs, you reference being harassed by cops and the criminal justice system since you were 12 years old. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. PoW spoke with Shootergang Kony in anticipation of the tour and on the heels of his excellent new project, Red Paint Reverend. And despite being harassed by parole officers for as long as he can remember, he’s about to travel the country and embark on a 20-city tour with SOB x RBE. Despite hailing from the capital of the biggest state in America, he knows that his career provides a very rare opportunity to put his city on. He’s lived quite a lot in such a short time, and for the first time in his 21 years, he’s finally looking toward the future. ![]() Shootergang Kony carries the weight of both his slain brothers and the commercial viability of an entire city’s music scene. For those listeners not acquainted with Brotha Lynch Hung, this is the first time that the city has ever “mattered” nationally. The prodigious talent is leading an invigorating wave of Sacramento hip-hop right now. ![]() Shootergang Kony, a young man with a rapidly-metastasizing legacy, will be here for a long time. To change it would dishonor the memory of fallen brothers. But the 21-year-old Sacramento native says he has no plans to go by any other title. He knows his name makes it harder to reach the radio or the charts, and easier to land a lengthy criminal sentence with gang enhancements. His attorneys are often pleading about it. Upon his release he hit the studio with renewed vigor, offering the angsty prison-themed single "Fresh Out" days after his release and following it with the Free JoJo mixtape in July of that year.We’re trying to get a big bank we can fit all into one hand. Around the time of these releases, Jojo was facing criminal charges and eventually went to jail for a period of several months in early 2018. He followed up later that same year with Jumpshot Jodye, a mixtape that found him branching out to work with even more guest collaborators such as Noni Blanco and Papi Jay. After several collaborative tracks, his first solo mixtape, Monkey in the Middle, was released in 2017 on Mozzy Records, label of established Sacramento rapper Mozzy. Along with upwards up eight other rappers and producers mostly in their late teens, JoJo began working on tracks around 2016 that would find their way onto various mixtapes or single releases. He was briefly incarcerated in early 2018 but returned after his stint in prison with the spirited mixtape Free Jojo.Ĭoming up in the fertile rap scene of Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood, ShooterGang JoJo was a founding member of the ShooterGang collective. Crafting a style that relied as much on humor as it did depictions of brutal street life, JoJo's personality shone as a key component of his style. He frequently collaborated with other ShooterGang members such as ShooterGang Kony, as well as other Sacramento rappers like BabyFace Gunna and Young Meezy. As part of the Sacramento-based rap collective ShooterGang, ShooterGang JoJo emerged as a talented solo artist. ![]()
